A Big Cruise Myth Debunked

There’s a huge misconception about cruises that I need to clear up for you.

In my 3 years as a travel professional, I’ve noticed that many of you assume cruises are like floating, all-inclusive resorts.

And while some cruise lines might be more inclusive than others, none are truly all-inclusive.

So today, I’m breaking down what all-inclusive means, what’s included in a cruise fare, what’s not, and how to make a cruise vacation feel all-inclusive.

What Does All-Inclusive Mean?

Generally, all-inclusive refers to resort reservations that cover your accommodations, food, beverages, and (usually) gratuities.

Disney, Virgin, and Celebrity cruises are more “inclusive” than other cruise lines, but they’re not technically all-inclusive vacations.

Because while food is included, most cruise lines do not cover beverages and alcohol (unless you add-on a beverage package.)

Additionally, speciality dining (any dining outside of the main dining rooms) will cost you extra.

What else isn’t included on most cruise ships? WiFi, spa access, excursions, and some  on board activities, such as:

  • Gambling

  • Laser tag and go-carts (Norwegian Cruise Lines)

  • Ropes courses and rock walls (though some cruise lines do include this in your cruise fare)

  • Spa access

Am I telling you this to discourage you from booking a cruise vacation? No! But I do want you to be prepared for sneaky expenses so that you aren’t left with sticker shock by the end of your trip.

How to Make a Cruise Feel More Inclusive

First, you need to hire a vacation planner. My services are completely free, and I get the inside scoop on deals–often after we’ve booked your vacation. (These deals can be applied to your vacation fare and can include discounts on excursions, spa amenities, beverage packages, and more.

And when you purchase these add-ons,  your vacation will feel like you are on a floating, all-inclusive resort by the time you board the ship.

What Cruise Lines are More Inclusive than Others?

It’s true that some cruise lines feel more inclusive than others. For example, some specialty dining options are included in your Disney cruise fare.

And Virgin cruise line covers gratuity, WiFi, and “essential” beverages, such as non-pressed juices, sodas, coffee, and teas.

To Sum It Up

No, cruises are not all inclusive, but there are ways to avoid spending a lot while on the ship.

When you hire a travel planner, purchase upgrades, and book excursions ahead of your trip, your cruise will feel like a floating all-inclusive resort.
