How to Determine Your Ideal Time to Travel

What’s one question I get asked all the time as a travel expert?

“When is the best time to travel?”

And while I wish there was a standard answer to this question, it really does depend on a lot of factors.

Keep reading to learn how to determine the best time to travel based on your unique travel needs!

Consideration #1: Cost

If cost is a big factor for you, consider this: the most cost-conscious time to travel is during your destination of choice’s off season.

For example, the lowest pricing in Costa Rica coincides with its rainy season, which typically starts in mid-April and can last through November.

So, if you’re okay with (a lot) of rain, then you can save a significant amount of money by traveling in that country’s off season.

However, if you choose the lowest pricing without considering the season, your vacation might not meet your expectations (and therefore might not be worth the expense!)

Consideration #2: School Breaks

Keep in mind that these school breaks make for busy travel seasons:

  • Spring break (late-March through mid-April)

  • Summer break (late May through mid-late August)

  • Fall break (mid-October)

  • Thanksgiving week

  • Christmas break (mid-late December)

For example, if you plan to visit Walt Disney World or Universal Studios during these breaks, you’ll have to deal with a lot of crowds and a lot of wait times.

Also, basic supply and demand will lead to an increase in travel prices.

So, if you have the flexibility, you’ll find better prices while school is in session.

And if you don’t have that flexibility, book early to secure better pricing.

Consideration #3: Climate & Seasons

A lot of my clients base their travel plans on the climate and season.

For example, if you want to escape winter weather, consider traveling to the Caribbean, where the average low is about 72 degrees in January!

If you want to take in the fall foliage, a Smoky Mountains vacation in the fall is what you need!

But remember: if you’re looking to escape the snow or peep those fall colors, so are a lot of other travelers!

So book early to secure your reservations and better pricing!

Here are a few examples of seasonal events you’ll want to book early for!

  • Halloween Horror at Universal Studios

  • Mickey’s Merry Christmas Season at Disney World and Disney Land

  • Hammerhead shark dives in the Bahamas

  • Sea turtle nesting or hatching season in Mexico

To Sum It Up

The best time to travel is what’s best for you, not the Internet. So be sure to consider your unique travel needs when booking your next big vacation!

Consider …

  • Price,

  • Your children’s school schedule,

  • Climate, and

  • And if you want to deal with lots of crowds
