5 Air Travel Tips for Parents of Infants & Toddlers
Are you vacationing with an infant soon? If so, you’re in the right spot! Keep reading for 5 air travel tips for parents!
I remember the first time I traveled with my infant son, Chase. As a member of the armed forces, I’d done my fair share of solo traveling, but traversing airports with an infant as a new mom was a whole different ball game!
Since that first flight, Chase and I have taken more than 100 trips together, and I’ve learned quite a bit along the way. Today, I’m sharing them with you!
Travel Tip #1: Pack A new Toy
… or book … or game!
If you have a toddler or older infant, you’ve probably learned that they have the attention span of a fruit fly and need to be entertained constantly.
That’s why I quickly learned to pack a new toy, book, or game in our carry on bag when flying.
When Chase would get bored with his usual toys on the flight, I’d whip out the new surprise just in time.
Travel Pro Tip: Avoid toys or games that make a lot of noise–this will keep your in-flight neighbors a lot happier!
Travel Tip #2: Pack Noise Canceling Ear Protection
Airplanes are loud.
High quality, noise canceling headphones or ear protection can help make the plane ride more enjoyable for you and your little one.
Travel Pro Tip: Practice wearing the headphones before you travel to ensure a good fit and to help your little one get used to wearing them.
Travel Pro Tip #3: Bring A Change (or two!) of Clothes
Be sure to pack a change of clothes (including socks and shoes) in your carry on.
Kids are unpredictable, spills happen, and even potty trained toddlers have accidents in unfamiliar places.
Pro Tip: If you have an infant (hello, blowouts!), it’s a good idea to pack a change of clothes for you, too!
Travel Pro Tip #4: Keep ‘Em Moving
Want your toddler to keep calm on the flight? Don’t sit down while you wait to board the plane!
To help your toddler burn off that energy before you board, walk around the terminal and play games such as “Simon Says.” Whatever you do, avoid sitting!
Pro Tip: Save the screen time for the middle of the flight (if your child doesn’t fall asleep first!)
Travel Pro Tip #5: Consider Naps
Speaking of sleep, if your little one can nap on the go, try to schedule your flight during their typical nap time.
However, if you know your child will have a difficult time sleeping with plane distractions, choose a flight that will allow them to nap before or after you depart.
Travel Pro Tip: Flying with a little one takes a lot of flexibility and patience! It might be difficult to stick to your routines, and keeping this in mind ahead of time will help you set realistic expectations!
